At least eight individuals have lost their lives in the most recent US airstrikes on Yemen's capital, Sanaa, according to reports from Houthi-affiliated media. These latest attacks have contributed to a staggering death toll of over 220 people in Yemen since mid-March.
The Al Masirah TV channel reported on Monday that the fatalities occurred in a US strike that targeted the Bani al-Harith district, located north of Sanaa. Additionally, US forces conducted strikes in Yemen's Amran and Saada governorates on Sunday night, with reports indicating two more deaths from an earlier attack in Sanaa.
The channel described the victims as "eight martyrs, including children and women," following the assault on the Thaqban area in Bani al-Harith. Subsequent reports suggested that dozens may have died in the US bombing of Saada, which hit a detention center.
With these recent bombings, the total number of fatalities from US strikes in Yemen has reached 228, based on Houthi casualty reports. The US military confirmed on Sunday that it has executed over 800 strikes in Yemen since March 15, claiming to have killed hundreds of Houthi fighters.
The Central Command (CENTCOM) of the US military, responsible for operations in the Middle East, stated that these strikes have resulted in significant losses among Houthi forces, including numerous leaders. CENTCOM also indicated that operations would persist, but details regarding the strikes would remain undisclosed to the public.
“To maintain operational security, we have intentionally limited the disclosure of details regarding our ongoing or future operations,” CENTCOM stated. “We are very deliberate in our operational approach, but will not reveal specifics about what we’ve done or what we will do,” it added.
The US has not addressed the civilian casualties resulting from its extensive bombing campaign in Yemen, which commenced on March 15 and has involved nearly daily strikes. US forces assert that they are targeting the Houthis due to the group's attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and on Israel. In response, the Houthis claim their attacks on Red Sea shipping linked to Israel are retaliation for Israel's actions in Gaza.
On April 18, a US strike on Yemen’s Ras Isa fuel port resulted in at least 74 deaths and 171 injuries, marking the deadliest known US attack in Yemen to date. The escalation of US strikes coincides with President Donald Trump's intensified efforts to pressure Iran, the primary supporter of the Houthis, into negotiating a new nuclear deal.
US operations are being conducted from two aircraft carriers in the region: the USS Harry S Truman in the Red Sea and the USS Carl Vinson in the Arabian Sea. Despite the US military actions, Houthi forces continue to launch missiles at Israel and US vessels in the Red Sea, as well as US military drones.
