Iran has carried out the execution of a “high-ranking spy” linked to Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, according to media reports.
The individual, named Mohsen Langarneshin, was found guilty of facilitating field and technical support for Mossad’s operations within Iran, which included the assassination of Hassan Sayyad Khodaei, a member of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, in Tehran in May 2022, as reported by the Mizan news agency of the Iranian judiciary on Wednesday.
Langarneshin was hanged on Wednesday morning after being convicted of providing extensive “logistical, technical, and operational support” to Mossad for a period of two years, beginning in 2020, the judiciary stated through its official news outlet, Mizan.
The report highlighted that one of the main charges against Langarneshin was his role in the May 2022 murder of IRGC colonel Hassan Sayyad Khodaei, who was shot by two assailants on motorcycles while returning home in Tehran.
The judiciary detailed some of Langarneshin’s alleged “criminal actions,” which included offering logistical, technical, and operational assistance for an attack on an industrial facility linked to the Iranian Defence Ministry in Isfahan, procuring communication devices for Mossad operatives, acquiring vehicles and outfitting them with operational equipment, transferring funds from Israeli officials to agents within Iran, and securing safe houses in various Iranian provinces.
Mizan reported that Langarneshin purchased a motorcycle to monitor Khodaei’s movements, communicated this information to Mossad, and was present during the assassination.
Furthermore, he was accused of aiding an attack on an industrial site in Isfahan associated with Iran’s Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics.
The report indicated that Langarneshin had confessed to all the charges against him.
Iran presented “extensive intelligence and technical evidence” linking Langarneshin to these activities, asserting that he “fully confessed” to his involvement.
In the context of a prolonged shadow conflict with Israel, Iran has executed several individuals for their alleged connections to Mossad, particularly those accused of sabotage and assassination efforts aimed at disrupting its nuclear program.
In December 2023, four individuals, including three men and a woman, were executed for their supposed ties to Mossad.
Langarneshin’s execution occurs amid renewed negotiations regarding the US-Iran nuclear deal, which Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has claimed Israel is trying to obstruct.
A fourth round of Oman-mediated discussions between Washington and Tehran is set to take place on Saturday in Rome, as reported by Tehran.
