The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Gujranwala sentenced Naveed, the primary suspect in the assassination attempt on former Prime Minister Imran Khan, to life imprisonment on two charges and imposed a fine of Rs500,000.
The court found Naveed guilty of terrorism and the murder of PTI supporter Moazzam during the attack on Khan in Wazirabad in November 2022.
In addition to the life sentences, Naveed received additional prison terms ranging from three to five years for injuring four other individuals during the incident.
However, the court acquitted two co-accused, Tayyab Jahangir Butt and Waqas, due to insufficient evidence.
Earlier in February 2023, the same ATC granted bail to another suspect, Ahsan, who is the brother of a local PML-N leader, while denying bail to co-accused Waqas. Ahsan was released after posting surety bonds of Rs500,000.
This case originated from a gun attack during PTI’s long march in Wazirabad on November 3, 2022, which resulted in injuries to Imran Khan, Senator Faisal Javed, and others, while one PTI supporter, Moazzam, lost his life.
Khan later alleged that senior government officials, including the federal interior minister, were involved in orchestrating the attack. The incident sparked a political and legal confrontation before the police officially registered the case.
A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was established on November 3 under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997, and the First Information Report (FIR) was filed on November 7.
