A man has been charged following the death of a pedestrian in a collision in the southern suburbs of Sydney, as reported by police in New South Wales (NSW) on Wednesday.
Emergency services responded to the incident in Blakehurst, located approximately 16 kilometers south of central Sydney, just before 7 p.m. local time on Tuesday, where they discovered a 60-year-old woman had been struck by a vehicle, according to Xinhua news agency.
Despite the efforts of ambulance paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, a 28-year-old man, was unharmed but was taken to the hospital for mandatory testing.
After being released from the hospital, the man was arrested and taken to a police station, where he faces charges of dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning death.
If found guilty, he could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for the first charge and 18 months for the second.
NSW Police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, and a report regarding the woman's death will be submitted to the state coroner.
In a different case, police in Queensland are on the lookout for the driver of a stolen vehicle involved in a hit-and-run that resulted in the death of a cyclist on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the Queensland Police Service on Wednesday, a 34-year-old man was cycling in Bundaberg, about 290 kilometers north of Brisbane, when he was hit by a black car around 7:50 p.m. local time on Tuesday.
Emergency responders attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the cyclist, but he was declared dead at the scene.
The police reported that the stolen vehicle fled the scene but was later found abandoned. A search for the driver is currently underway.
