The family of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, who tragically fell victim to a brutal rape and murder within the hospital grounds last August, made a serious claim on Monday. They alleged that the victim's mobile number was accessed via WhatsApp while the device was under the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
This issue was brought up during a hearing at a special court in Kolkata on Monday afternoon. The victim's parents' lawyer presented a written summary of his observations regarding the CBI's investigation, which included this specific allegation.
The lawyer stated that the victim's mobile number was accessed through WhatsApp several months after the incident, despite the phone being in CBI custody, and that her name was subsequently removed from a WhatsApp Group of which she had been a member.
Initially, the Kolkata Police had seized the mobile phone on the morning of August 9 last year, shortly after the victim's body was discovered in a seminar hall within the hospital. However, within ten days, the city police transferred the phone to the CBI after the central agency took over the investigation following a directive from the Calcutta High Court.
During the proceedings, the victim's counsel questioned how the mobile number could be accessed through WhatsApp while the phone was still with the CBI. The CBI's lawyer suggested that the victim's parents should have communicated their concerns to the investigating officials. In response, the victim's parents' lawyer informed the court that although they had previously shared information with the CBI, they had not received any updates regarding the investigation based on that information.
