Anthony Albanese says his election was a vote for equality and kindess.

Anthony Albanese of the Labor Party has successfully overcome the "incumbency curse" to secure re-election as Australia's prime minister in a decisive victory.

While official vote counting is still ongoing, it is clear that Albanese's center-left government will significantly expand its majority following a substantial defeat for the conservative Liberal-National coalition across the nation.

"Today, the Australian electorate has chosen to endorse Australian values: fairness, ambition, and opportunity for everyone; demonstrating resilience in tough times and compassion for those in need," Albanese stated.

Peter Dutton, the leader of the Coalition, who lost his seat after 24 years, took "full responsibility" for the party's defeat and expressed his apologies to fellow MPs.

Labor has experienced positive swings in support nationwide—a rare occurrence for a government in its second term in Australia—making Albanese the first prime minister in over two decades to win consecutive elections.

The party's achievement has also countered a trend of voters moving away from the two major parties, which was a significant narrative in the previous election of 2022.

Projections from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) indicate that Labor is set to secure 86 seats, the Coalition around 40, and the Greens Party one or two, with other minor parties and independents leading in nine seats.

This marks a gain of nine seats for Labor and a notable decline in support for the Greens. However, many "teal" independents have retained their positions in more conservative, inner-city areas.

This outcome is a striking contrast to the beginning of the year when Albanese's approval ratings were at historic lows due to global economic challenges, intense national discussions, and increasing public dissatisfaction with the government.
