Yorkshire Police have reported that Rumeesa Ahmed was speeding and using her mobile phone when the accident occurred.

A driver who was speeding and distracted by her phone has been sentenced to nine years in prison after causing the death of a pedestrian.

Athira Anilkumar Laly Kumari, 28, tragically lost her life when Rumeesa Ahmed's VW Golf collided with a bus stop in Leeds in 2023.

The 27-year-old driver, who is from Bradford, was also responsible for seriously injuring a 40-year-old man during the incident on Stanningley Road, according to West Yorkshire Police.

At Leeds Crown Court, Ahmed pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving, leading to an 11-year driving ban.

On the morning of February 22, around 08:30, Ahmed was driving towards Bradford when her vehicle struck Ms Kumari, the bus stop, and the waiting man at the junction with Cockshott Lane.

Authorities confirmed that Ahmed was speeding and distracted by her phone at the time of the incident.

The family of Athira Anilkumar Laly Kumari expressed that her passing has created a "deep, profound void" in their lives.

The injured man, who was at the bus stop, required significant medical attention and a lengthy hospital stay, as reported by the police.

Romeesa Ahmed will have to pass additional tests before she can regain her driving privileges.

In a heartfelt tribute to Ms Kumari, her family stated: "She was not merely a family member; she was our foundation, the glue that held us together.

"A loving daughter, a devoted wife, a caring mother, and a beacon of light and inspiration to all who knew her."

Following Ahmed's sentencing, Det Con Adele Murphy-Hartley remarked, "Speeding and mobile phone use while driving are among the leading causes of serious injuries and fatal accidents on the road.

"This serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences when these behaviors are combined."

She added, "Ahmed's reckless actions have led to the loss of a determined woman who came to England with hopes of improving her life and that of her family."

Ms Kumari's family concluded with, "Athira was the heart of our lives - her absence has created a void so deep and profound that words cannot adequately express the extent of our sorrow.
