On Saturday, French authorities were actively searching for a man believed to have fatally attacked a Muslim worshipper inside a mosque in southern France, subsequently recording the victim's final moments on his mobile phone while hurling derogatory remarks at Islam. The victim was reportedly stabbed multiple times on Friday morning in La Grand-Combe, a village located in the Gard region. As of Saturday, the suspect remained at large, according to regional prosecutor Abdelkrim Grini, who informed AFP that the investigation is now considering the murder as a potential hate crime motivated by Islamophobia. The assailant filmed himself making offensive comments about “Allah” immediately after the attack and sent the video to another individual, who later shared it on social media before removing it. Although the actual stabbing was not visible in the shared footage, security cameras inside the mosque captured the incident. In his own video, the suspect acknowledged the presence of these cameras, stating, “I am going to be arrested -- that’s for sure.” Reports indicate that the suspect, who has not yet been apprehended, is a French national of Bosnian descent and is not a follower of Islam. “The search for this individual is ongoing, and we are treating this matter with utmost seriousness,” prosecutor Grini remarked. “We are exploring all avenues, including the possibility of an Islamophobic motive,” he added, confirming that the French anti-terrorism prosecutor's office is contemplating whether to take over the investigation.
