SC denies special orders for Imran's prison meeting

Islamabad: The Supreme Court on Wednesday decided against approving a request for special provisions to permit PTI founder Imran Khan to consult with his legal team while incarcerated.

Senior counsel Salman Safdar informed a panel led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi that the former Prime Minister is currently under exceptional circumstances, with more than 300 legal cases filed against him.

Thus, the court required particular instructions to permit him to have discussions with his legal team at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi.

The three-member Supreme Court was hearing appeals related to the arson and attack incidents that occurred on May 9, 2023. The proceedings involved petitions challenging Mr. Khan’s physical remand and appeals against the restoration of his pre-arrest bail.

CJP says legal team can interact with PTI founder whenever they want

The bench, however, avoided accepting the plea, with the CJP observing that the court would not issue any directions in this regard. However, he stated that meetings would take place whenever the counsel wanted to interact with the PTI founder.

During the proceedings, Special Prosecutor Zulfiqar Naqvi sought Imran Khan’s physical remand, indicating that polygraph and voice-matching assessments were still pending, and claimed that the PTI leader was not being cooperative. The Chief Justice of Pakistan warned the prosecutor against such statements in court, leading Mr. Naqvi to retract his comments

PTI leaders not allowed to meet Imran, again

In the meantime, the Supreme Court has issued a notice to PTI leader Sanam Javed regarding her acquittal in the May 9 case, questioning the necessity of her physical remand, especially considering her status as a woman.

The special prosecutor stated that the Lahore High Court had released Ms Javed after she contested her remand.

The Supreme Court has also agreed to consider Fawad Chaudhry's appeal regarding the filing of multiple cases for the same offense.

In the matter concerning the revocation of Shehryar Afridi's bail, the Supreme Court has directed the trial court to finalize the trial within four months.

The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing regarding Sheikh Rashid’s appeal for acquittal in the GHQ attack case until April 22. According to Sheikh Rashid’s attorney, there are no witnesses implicating his client.
