Since mid-March, US forces have conducted airstrikes on over 1,000 targets in Yemen as part of their ongoing campaign against the Huthi rebels, according to a statement from the Pentagon on Tuesday.

The Huthis escalated their attacks on shipping routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden towards the end of 2023, prompting the United States to initiate airstrikes against them in early 2024.

"Since March 15, USCENTCOM has targeted more than 1,000 locations, resulting in the deaths of numerous Huthi fighters and leaders, while also diminishing their operational capabilities," stated Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, referencing the military command overseeing operations in the Middle East.

On Wednesday, the UK announced its participation in strikes against Huthi positions alongside the United States.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the Royal Air Force had conducted strikes on facilities approximately 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of Sanaa, which were reportedly being utilized by Huthi rebels for drone production.

The UK has been involved in coordinated air operations against the Huthis under US leadership since early 2024.

Earlier, CENTCOM reported that over 800 targets had been struck since mid-March, claiming that hundreds of Huthi fighters had been killed in the process.

Following that announcement, Huthi-controlled media reported that US airstrikes had targeted a migrant detention center in Saada, resulting in at least 68 fatalities, with a UN spokesperson later indicating that the deceased were migrants.

A US defense official mentioned that the military is investigating claims of civilian casualties linked to its operations in Yemen.

The Iran-aligned Huthis have disrupted maritime traffic through the Suez Canal, a crucial passage that typically accommodates around 12 percent of global shipping.

The rebels assert that their attacks on shipping are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, which has suffered extensive damage due to Israeli military actions following a surprise Hamas assault in October 2023.
