The U.S. State Department has confirmed that Washington has reached out to both New Delhi and Islamabad amid rising tensions following a deadly incident in the Pahalgam region of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
The United States is urging both nations to seek a "responsible solution" in light of the recent escalation. A spokesperson from the U.S. State Department stated that they are closely monitoring the situation and have been in contact with the governments of India and Pakistan at various levels.
"This situation is developing, and we are keeping a close watch on the events. We have engaged with both India and Pakistan," the spokesperson conveyed to Reuters via email.
The spokesperson further remarked, "The United States encourages all involved parties to collaborate towards a responsible resolution."
In the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, India accused Pakistan without providing evidence, which led to the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and the implementation of several countermeasures.
In response, Pakistan halted all trade with India, closed its airspace to Indian flights, and labeled Indian diplomats in Islamabad as undesirable.
In a proactive diplomatic move, Pakistan proposed to facilitate an impartial international investigation and reached out to foreign ministers globally to inform them about the situation.
China has reiterated its support for Pakistan.
Earlier, the Chinese Foreign Ministry released a statement expressing its backing for Pakistan following the Pahalgam incident.
The statement conveyed China’s complete understanding of Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns and strongly endorsed Islamabad’s efforts to protect its sovereignty and security interests.
China also called for a fair and timely investigation into the tragic attack in Pahalgam, where 26 tourists lost their lives to gunmen in occupied Kashmir four days ago.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry stressed the necessity of impartiality in the investigation.
The ministry urged both Pakistan and India to exercise patience and engage in dialogue as a means to resolve their outstanding issues.
