The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) remains instrumental in enhancing regional connectivity, collaboration, and interpersonal relations throughout South Asia.

Initiated in 1992, the SVES permits designated categories of citizens from SAARC member nations — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka — to cross borders without requiring a visa. This initiative seeks to bolster relationships among South Asian countries by facilitating easier movement for dignitaries and professionals.

Under this scheme, individuals belonging to 24 specific categories — such as parliamentarians, judges of higher courts, senior officials, journalists, business leaders, and sports figures — are issued a special travel document referred to as a “Visa Sticker.” This sticker, provided by the respective home country, is valid for one year and enables smooth regional travel.

The SVES highlights SAARC’s dedication to promoting mutual understanding and cooperation among its member states. Member countries have the authority to periodically assess and enhance the scheme’s implementation to maintain its effectiveness and relevance in evolving circumstances.
