ISI Chief Lt. Gen. Asim Malik Takes on Additional Role as National Security Advisor

In response to the escalating security concerns along the India-Pakistan border, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik as the new National Security Adviser.

As per the announcement from security officials, the current Director-General of Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI), Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik, will also take on the responsibilities of National Security Advisor.

Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik, HI(M), is a distinguished three-star general who has been leading the ISI since September 30, 2024. Notably, he is the first individual with a PhD to hold the position of ISI Director-General.

He succeeded Lieutenant General Nadeem Anjum as the head of the ISI. Prior to this role, General Asim Malik served as the Adjutant General at the General Headquarters (GHQ) and has commanded both an Infantry Division in Balochistan and an Infantry Brigade in Waziristan.

His accolades include receiving the Sword of Honour during his training, and he has held significant positions such as Chief Instructor at the National Defence University (NDU) and as an instructor at the Command and Staff College in Quetta.

Additionally, Lieutenant General Asim is an alumnus of Fort Leavenworth and the Royal College of Defence Studies, and he has previously worked in the Military Operations Directorate before his current role.
